Stiff, dry-feeling knees usually mean your joint’s natural lubrication is breaking down, most often because of knee osteoarthritis. That dry, grinding feeling is rarely about a missing nutrient. The knee is a synovial joint. A capsule surrounds it and produces synovial fluid, a thick, slippery liquid.[1] The fluid reduces friction between the bones and cartilage every time you bend or straighten your leg. It also delivers nutrients to cartilage, which has no blood supply of its own. When the joint moves often, this fluid circulates well and stays effective. At that point, genicular artery embolization, or GAE, is a minimally invasive option worth considering, since it specifically targets the inflammation driving many osteoarthritis symptoms.[5]
Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)
Genicular artery embolization is an image-guided procedure in which an interventional radiologist places a thin catheter into the genicular arteries that supply the knee, then uses tiny particles to reduce blood flow to areas where the synovial lining has grown abnormal, inflamed blood vessels.[6]
By targeting this abnormal blood flow directly, GAE is designed to reduce the inflammation behind the knee pain, swelling, and stiffness of knee osteoarthritis. GAE is typically done on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia and light sedation, and most patients go home the same day.[6]
Clinical research, including multicenter trials and systematic reviews, has reported real improvements in knee pain and function for well-selected patients, with some studies showing the benefit lasts for months to years.[7] GAE does not involve cutting or replacing joint structures.
GAE may not be right for everyone, and it does not reverse existing cartilage loss; it is designed to reduce inflammation and manage symptoms. A full evaluation is the only way to know whether it fits your knee osteoarthritis and your symptoms.
